A gentle yet impactful way to explore complex themes like belonging, identity and resilience with young readers.
It provides an opportunity for reflection on the experiences of those who are displaced and reminds us of the importance of empathy and human connection.
My Two Blankets is a children’s picture book that was written by Toowoomba based author Irena Kobald. Irena initially identified the need to tell this story after witnessing her own child play with a new friend in the park, and wondering how they could communicate without a common language. Out of this wondering, and the wish to give people who only speak one language an insight into the language learning process, My Two Blankets was written.
My Two Blankets reflects a universal experience of migration and belonging, making it a vital tool for fostering empathy and understanding.
Beautifully illustrated by Freya Blackwood, the themes of the book are highly inspiring for adults due to its underlying message of change, adaptation, loneliness and resilience; rebuilding your identity in a new environment.
Toowoomba is a designated Welcome Refugee Zone and home to a diverse population that has enriched the region’s cultural fabric. However, newly arrived refugees often face significant challenges, including social isolation, cultural adjustment, and limited opportunities for meaningful interaction with the broader community. his exhibition addresses these challenges by creating an inclusive space where refugee and non-refugee communities come together through shared storytelling and creative expression.
